5 things about the PS4 that everyone should be excited about.
1. Great Hardware Design & Developer Friendly Architecture
The PS3 is a very reliable machine, my launch model only messed up running into year 6 by over heating and by that time the Machine had been used an incredible amount, and then there is the Xbox360 which was dogged by issues that set Microsoft a hefty repair Bill…many of my friends who owned 360′s had sent their systems back multiple times for repair. Looking at both the next Generation machines now, Sony looks to have built the better hardware with a power supply built in, replaceable off the market hard drive and allows many third party peripherals to be connected.
The PS3 however started it life cycle a little rough with being more expensive on launch, dearth of launch titles and mixed messaging that confused consumers. If that wasn’t enough it was also plagued by horrible multi platform titles. The conversion for Multi platform titles from 360 to the PS3 made Sony’s machine a laughing stock.Sony got really bad ports including the initial EA titles, Call of Duty 3, Bayonetta to name a few. Developers had a tough time getting used to the complex architecture and nearly abandoned the platform altogether (Valve) it was only after companies starting using the PS3 as the lead platform we finally saw Developers actually taking advantage of the PS3 see NFS Most Wanted, LA Noire, Portal 2 etc.
The PS4 does not have this issue, Mark Cerny the lead Architect made sure that developers were on board from day one and and were Happy with the Architecture, by keeping to x86 PC like hardware software development will be simplified and quicker…oh and did i mention it was cheaper then its Microsoft Counterpart.
2. Amazing First Party Studios and Franchises
Argue all you want but you cannot deny that Sony has some of the best First Party Studios in the WORLD - Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Evolution Studios, Sony Japan , Guerrilla, Media Molecule and many more. They have been responsible for for some of the best franchises on Sony’s Machines that have been critically lauded and there is no reason why this should stop with the PS4. Killzone Shadow fall, The Order 1886, Knack and Infamous Second son are just some examples of games coming out on the next gen console…but we shouldn’t forget that Naughty Dog just delivered The Last of Us on PS3 which has been a critical and commercial SMASH for Sony!
3. Remote Play.
You ever get stuck in the room with something you did not want to watch and wished you could just play your console in the other room, well Sony has catered to this and now you can connect you Vita to the PS4 and remotely play the game over Wifi. This allows you to stream the game to the Vita’s screen and play with nigh on identical controls, the other great feature is that you can use the Vita as a second screen like the Wii-U, if again this is implemented in such a way that it adds to the experience this will be a very exciting feature to have. Battlefield 4 while I am lying down in the next room …YES PLEASE!
4. PlayStation Plus
Anyone who has used this service will already know that this is a fantastic service, you get Multiple games Free every month to download, early Access to betas and discounts on DLC. This service will be carried over onto the PS4 and yes this will be Mandatory if you want to play online but that in turn allows Sony to Keep developing their Plus service and keep the gamers Happy. £40 a year is bargain considering the amount of content is made available.
5. Dual Shock 4
I know I know…your going to say the XBOX controller is better has better triggers etc…but is it really that much better, I would argue that in many ways its only made for FPS games. Like many gamers out there i prefer my controller to play well with the multitude of genre’s available and I love beat’em ups and Third person adventure games, RPG’s indie games etc and this is where the controller excels, its comfortable responsive and recharges without a hideous battery pack attached to it. With Dual Shock 4 Sony has gone with the “don’t fix what’s not Broken” mantra and just added to it. The new inclusions being a Touch pad, added grip, share button to share videos instantly and PS Camera integration with light bar and built in mono speaker with headphone jack. Developer’s are bound to take advantage of the new tech and give us new ways to interact with games. Many of the past complaints have been addressed with the new design for the PS4 controller – it feels weightier and the triggers are definitely better.
So what do you guys think? Are you excited for the PS4? Have you pre-ordered? Which Console are you leaning towards?
